Two vehicles collided at an intersection in Swisher County on Wednesday afternoon, leaving one person dead and four injured.

A 2012 Ford F250 towing a flatbed trailer was traveling westbound on Hwy. 86, approximately 12 miles west of Tulia, at about 5:40 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 23, according to a statement from the Texas Department of Public Safety. At the same time, a 2008 Chevrolet Silverado was heading north on FM 2301 and approaching a stop sign at the intersection with Hwy. 86.

DPS noted there is no stop sign for traffic on Hwy. 86 at the intersection with FM 2301.

The driver of the Silverado disregarded the stop sign on FM 2301 and struck the F250 on the driver's side, causing it and the towed trailer to leave the roadway and overturn, according to authorities.

DPS said the unsecured driver in the Silverado, identified as Heriberto Cantu, 35, of Rio Grande, was ejected and died at the scene; however the pickup did not overturn. Cantu was pronounced dead by Swisher County Justice of the Peace Elsa Carrasco.

Four people in the F250 were injured, and all had been wearing seat belts at the time of the crash. The driver, Zachary Reyes, 21, of Happy, and a passenger, Danny Anderson, 33, of Amarillo, were treated at the scene for minor injuries. Two other passengers, Cody West, 23, of Amarillo, and Seth Schulte, 26, of Canyon, were taken to Swisher Memorial with non-life-threatening injuries.

The posted speed limit was 75 mph, and road conditions were dry and clear at the time of the crash, which remains under investigation by the Texas Highway Patrol Troopers.
